What About Us, Inc. (WAU) is a resident-led, grass-roots organization founded in 2015 and is dedicated to building neighborhood connectedness and capacity to lift up the voices of residents who feel marginalized. Founder and executive director, Tammara Howard, is committed to strengthening the physical, mental, and emotional health of Detroit youth and their parents through the services of WAU.
What About Us primarily services the Gratiot Woods neighborhood but services are open to all Detroit residents. WAU has successfully offered a range of programming and workshops to Detroit Residents. Programming such as, GED Prep, conflict resolution, LGBTQ community awareness, family building activities,Freedom of Information Act training classes Parental Involvement activities Workshops on twice-exceptional children.
Our most ambitious long term project is the creation of the Resilience Hub. The main concerns we hear from residents are poor health, home repair, having more access to fresh produce, beautification, and neighborhood safety. What these concerns have at their root is a fundamental lack of resilience within our community. This is driving force to transform the neighborhood hub into the The Resilience Hub. The Hub will include the physical space to hold programming but it also includes the surrounding infrastructure such as solar panels and other green innovation that will help residents build and maintain capacity into the future.
A gardening grant from the Eastside Community Network (ECN) in 2018 allowed us to purchase and redevelop land to create the What About Us Community Garden. In addition to participating in gardening activities, cooking demonstrations, and workshops on eating healthy, our residents can enjoy community meetings held in the garden during the summer. Other projects have included building benches and helping elderly residents maintain their yards.
