What We Do

What About Us is a  grass-roots organization that residents lead. Our organization is dedicated to building neighborhood connectedness and capacity.  What About Us strives to lift up the voices of marginalized residents.  We focus on strengthening the physical, mental, and emotional health and well-being of Detroit youth and their parents. Although we service the Gratiot Woods  Nighborborhood, our services are open to all Detroit residents. 

In 2015 we established the What About Us Community Hub. The What About Us Community Hub is a well-utilized and trusted community facility that hosts community meetings and provides program activities in an inclusive, relaxed, and informal environment.  

Since 2016 What About Us has hosted the following program and activities for neighborhood youth and their parents: 

• GED Prep for residents
• Conflict resolution classes
• Parental Involvement activities allow the parent and child to work together to build a stronger relationship between the parent and child. 
• Workshops on raising the awareness of gifted and talented children with special needs.
• LGBTQ community awareness and family-building activities focus on removing the barriers and bridging the gap between parents and young adults. 
• Freedom of Information Act training - parents/guardians are taught the fundamental rights of children under the freedom of information act. 
• Community gardening activities, cooking demonstrations, and workshops on healthy eating.

Over the years What About Us has led several community beautification efforts. Projects range from building benches for the community garden to cutting the grass of elderly residents.
